Seafair Trophy
Wattle Downs Ponds – Manurewa - Auckland
22nd & 23rd May 2010
We had entries from 17 Competitors entering 69 classes for the Seafair Trophy / MMPBC Club Champs held at the Wattle Farm ponds at Manurewa on the 22nd and 23rd May.
Weather leading up Regatta had been constant rain for the proceeding week and looked like it could wash the Regatta out but as luck was on our side, the weather abated Friday afternoon just as the guys were setting up the course. Mark had made a set of new counter weights and the buoys’ which self adjusted to the water level. The weather stayed on our side for both Saturday and Sunday and with little or no wind it gave us good racing water on both days. The new retaining wall that surrounded the pond made the flat water turn undulating with a cross backwash from 6 boats racing around within the first 2 to 3 laps keeping drivers on their toes.

SATURDAY
The N2/LSH Hydro electrics were first up with 7 entries. All but one boat was still running at the finish. Mark had to thread his way around all those Dead boats to claim his first place.
Next up was the Limited “P” Hydro electrics with 8 starters and 7 finishers, making it hard for the scorer to keep track of what was happening, but it was some exciting racing with all those boats running at the same time.
Scale 45 Hydro had 7 of the 9 entries turn up for the start. Phil Woodham had his newly rebuilt ex Malcolm/Jason “Miller Magic/ Poseidon” renamed to “Miss Jaffa” running and was a consistent finisher.

Steve had his Oh Boy Oberto tuned and ready to race and was the one to beat.
Jason had rekindled Bruce Burns old “Nice One” with a new motor and a new name “Ittildo” It took Jason all the heats to sort out and was getting faster and faster all the time. The Final Take All heat, “Ittildo” blitz the field and took out the win…well done Jason.

Next up was Limited “P” Offshore electric and this was down on entries with only 5 entered but that didn’t slow them down much and some spectacular racing was on and again Jason took out this heat with his ex Bruce Burns OM26 “Night Mare”. (Bruce, think you better get your old boats back)
Class I heat racing had 9 entries but had 2 withdrawals on the day, with Merv’s “Express” receiver battery promptly giving up the ghost after a test run and Matt not happy with “Guzzler’s” exhaust system thinking if it broke would’ve exceeded our noise restriction that is in place. Racing was exciting and Mark with “Ohio Steel” managed to steel the win with finishes in all his heats.

Classic Sports Hydro had one of lowest entries with only 4 boats. Steve’s new “Executone” looks great and runs very realistic on the water. Andrew took maximum points with his hurriedly repaired “Mountain Dew” which had a violent crash the weekend before, splitting the hull and losing his cowl in the process.

SUNDAY
Sunday bought us fine weather, though slightly overcast with threat of rain later in the afternoon.
First up we had round 2 for the N2/LSH electric hydros with a better show than on Saturday with most boats finishing. Matt with “Burien” and Mark with “Voo Doo” ending up been joint winners.
Limited P hydro had only 2 finishes from 7 starters with the little hydros finding the cross chop from the new retaining walls to much to handle and we had boats flipping, rolling over and even one tried to become a submarine. Out of the chaos we had only the Ready to Run boats finishing with Chris and “UL1” taking 1st and Jeff with “Miss Superior” takes 2nd. Just shows you that these RTR boats are very competitive.

We had 9 entries in the 1/8th Scale Hydroplanes and we had some exciting races.
Steve’s “Executone” dominated most of the heats he was in though he was running on old plugs as his new ones failed to turn up. Merv had his “Budweiser” going a lot better than previous outings and Malcolm had the “Miller “singing but was having problems keeping his cowl on.

Mark’s ”York” was running with an old OS which made his boat reliable and he finished most heats. Bob had “Cellular One” is still sorting out a few gremlins but had some good speed and will soon be a force to reckoned with. The others were having all sorts of problems but one to finally come right was Jason with “DeWalt Tools” which had to make to the final heat by way of the Connie and guess what, it was “DeWalt” that took out the Take all Final and his very first ever 1/8th Scale Hydro win with SUHA after umpteen years of trying…Good one Jason, in fact Congratulations for taking out the double, Scale45 and 1/8th Seafair Trophy.

After the Final of the 1/8th Scale Hydroplanes we had a Presentation to celebrate 25 years of the Scale Unlimited Hydroplane Association. Jason Lester, President of SUHA presented Lapel Badges to the Foundation Members, Warren Belk, Skip Francis, Merv Sowden and Malcolm Miller. Unfortunately Don Horne was not able to attend this presentation but his lapel badge will be forwarded onto him.

After the Presentation the Limited P Offshore was run with Jeff and “Omega” taking out this heat.
Petrol Sport Hydro was next but 2 boats had withdrawn leaving a four boat field. Damian had came up from Hamilton for the day and showed us that he has got his “Lake race LRX” really screaming now. Unfortunately in trying to beat Andrew’s “Mountain Dew” not finishing any races, due to been upside down or mechanical issues! There is always next time Damian!

The last race of the day was the 20 minute Class I Endurance and with 5 boats withdrawing through attrition for one reason or another just left 4 boats left. It was decided to run 2 heats and Andrew with “HellBent” dominated with 81 laps.

Mark and “Ohio Steel” and his Deep Vee was up on the pace taking 2nd with 75laps followed by Bob “Toll” with 64 laps and Malcolm with “Sparky” on 50 laps.
It was a very enjoyable Regatta and everybody helped to mark the occasion in Celebrating 25years of SUHA
Thanks to the hard workers that helped to set up the course, put up the gazebos, cooked the BBQ and chipped in when required to help with running the show.
