2004 MMPBC and SUHA Seafair Trophy
This was the second year we had combined our Club Champs with the SUHA Seafair Trophy. We were greeted once again with a nice sunny weekend with perfect racing water. Paul and John made the trek from New Plymouth and we had a good turn out of competitors from our Club. Thanks go to those that helped with the setting-up and packing up. First up we had the 1/8th Scale Hydro one lap sprints with Malcolm just pippin Merv with a blistering 16.47 to Merv’s 16 81secs. In the racing that followed, Chris’s new boat Llumer was the only boat to finish all the heats but unfortunately had engine problems in the take all final which Paul won taking home the Seafair Trophy for the second time in a row. Well done Paul. Wayne ran Miss Thriftway that was only launched the week before and is an awesome looking boat on the water, which also showed it has a bit of speed as well.
Class I one-lap sprints followed and we had three boats under 18seconds. Adrian’s Bullet (petrol DV) did 17.91, Karl with White Lightning (petrol cat) did 17.62 and Malcolm’s Skulduggery (Nitro DV) did a fantastic16.66sec.
The racing that followed was exciting and a crowd pleaser and the old saying about finishing first, first you must finish rung true, as the racing was so close at the end of the first day that there was only 2 points difference between the first six boats.
Class II sprint racing on the first day was limited to only three heats with Malcolm having a perfect record of three wins. Class I 10-minute Off-Shore followed and Bruce’s Blue Thunder clocked up the most laps which everyone thought was a fluke as this boat always seemed to breakdown for one reason or another. I am sure most of the Guys thought they could overtake Bruce’s points in the 20-minute race on the Sunday.
Well that was it for the day, everybody looked please with themselves, and those that did not, knew they still had a chance on Sunday to make amends. Most of us went to the dinner at the Sports & Cossie Club, had a bit of good fun, and enjoyed the entertainment.
Sunday again bought us good weather for some exciting racing. First up was the Scale 45 1 lap sprints and we had two boats break 17 seconds, in fact one boat actually broke 16 seconds with Bruce doing 15.90sec nudging out Merv’s Radical Rat’s 16.13sec (Nice One Bruce). We had some excellent racing and Paul took out the take all final for the second consecutive year giving him both 1/8th and Scale 45 Hydro Trophies two years running. Again, well done Paul.
Next up we had the one-lap sprints for Class II and Malcolm broke 16 seconds with Obsession running a blitzing 15.78 that will be a hard time to bet in the future. Bruce with his home design and made Cat also did 19.97, which is a great achievement as well.
Round two of the Class II sprint racing followed and five heats were completed. Malcolm had two DNF that left Jason driving Coca Cola with 5 finishes, on top of the table with the points accumulated from Saturday.
Next up was the second Round of Class I sprint racing and with the points from Saturday so close this turned out to be a real cracker of a race. Five heats for each boat was again raced and the big mover of the day was Dean with four first and one second place made up the 22 point deficit from Saturday to move up to within 5 points from second place getter Blue Thunder driven by Bruce. Merv drove Express to victory winning only by 5 points.
The last race of the day was Class I Offshore and this was over 20 minutes on the reverse course. Bruce proved his critics wrong from the day before by taking out this race, but Malcolm and Graham weren’t far behind.
Thanks to Adrian and Dave for shooting some video, which everybody has enjoyed and thanks again to Margaret for the BBQ and to all those who helped with the running and setting up and tidying up afterwards.
Everybody should be looking forward to our Winter Champs on November 13th & 14th.
(Thanks to Merv for the Article on Club Champs)
