Diamond Cup
The Diamond Cup hosted by the Taranaki Model Boat Club at Lake Cowley.
Saturday Morning as we arrived at LakeCowley we were greeted with a slight breeze and flat water. The Scale 45’s were the first onto the water. After tune-up, the 1-lap sprints were started just as the wind increased which made the water quite bumpy. When the first round was completed, it was decided to let the placing’s stand and move to the alternative course at the other end of the lake. This was sheltered from the wind and gave us flat water more to our liking. Results of the 1-lap sprints went to Paul Flett with Miss Renault followed by John Nicholls’s new Lady Bug. Merv’s Radical Rat finished third while Jason succumbed to the lumpy water with Poseidon. Paul Garner was having radio problems with Annihilator and found his receiver had burnt out. Brian Dougan had to withdraw Outlaw as he was call out from work.

Working in the Pits
Heat Racing for the Scale 45s was intense and all the boats ended up with at least one heat win under to their credit. John has Lady Bug really singing now though he said there were a few more improvements that could be done. Lady Bug took out the heat racing followed by Poseidon in second and Miss Renault and Radical Rat tying for third. The Final came down to just two boats, Lady Bug and Miss Renault. Lady Bug was sure to get first place, leading down the back straight on the last lap it did the unexpected and tripped over something in the water and submerged. This left Miss Renault for the win but for a gust of wind picking her up and flipping over backwards.
This left us with no winners in the final.

LadyBug took out the Heat Racing for Scale 45
Class I sprint racing was exciting with very close racing between Hyperactive, Express Video and Jason’s new boat, Romper Stomper. In the end, Hyperactive took the honours with 40 pts from Express Video on 36 pts and Romper Stomper on 32 pts.

Hyperactive won Class I
The rest of the afternoon was open water for the 1/8ths to tune-up.
Sunday morning everybody was down at the Lake bright and early as the wind was again forecasted later in the day. Earlier on Paul Flett had bought Smokin Joe’s for us to peruse our weary eye over and this is a very nice looking boat and will not be long before it is race ready. Mr Pringles had withdrawn from the days racing.

Paul working on Speedy Printing
The first heat started on flat water but like yesterday it did not take to long to get to bumpy to race on. After the first heat finished we moved to the alternative site that again gave us some nice flat racing water. Jason with DeWalt Tools showed he was a top contender after winning the first heat but then found water in his radio box and took the rest of the heats to remedy the problem.

Dean has Winston really flying
Dean with his Winston Eagle and Merv’s Miss Budweiser had two heat wins and a second to their name. John was having problems keeping Captran Resort up the right way while in the mean time Miss Speedy Printing taking a while to tune in (someone called it a Tug Boat) started to find its legs in the later heats.

Captran Resorts after another flip
The final take all heat was a thriller with only three boats making the water before the 30 sec cut-off time elapsed. Miss Budweiser just edged out a fast charging DeWalt Tools while Miss Speedy Printing caught a gust of wind and reached for the skies.
