Round 1
The weather forecast said fine for both days but the wind would be up for Saturday and a slight wind for Sunday. The Taranaki Club have had a few Busy Bees and had re-laid the main course which now has 100 meter straights and 30meter turns. There was an alternative makeshift (unmeasured) course at the top of the lake which was used for Saturday and this partial sheltered the course from the wind which varied through the day. It was slightly rough for the N2 electrics with VOO DOO taking out the honours after CENTURY 21 missed a buoy and had to do an extra lap. MOTUL failed to finish. In the Limited P race the water was getting rougher down the back straight but the front straight you could go flat out and we had a good 4 boat start with Jeff and SUPERIOR leading around the first turn. Merv pushed WHIP LASHED to hard in trying to pass SUPERIOR and flipped. SUPERIOR thrived in the rough water and took out the win from VOO DOO and a DNF for MOTUL.

Sports 45’s one lappers were up next but the water was now getting really rough which can be seen from the times. It was decided to move the course closer in towards the pits and further to the left giving us more sheltered water to race on.

Bob was the only one to finish all his heats and somehow managed to get LIL’SNIFTERS to celebrate by doing a 360 degree flip after crossing the finishing line not once but I believe 4 times! Jason finally sorted out ITILDO and took out the winner take all final, second was LIL’SNIFTERS and no other boat finishing.

Class Petrol Hydro was next up and Andrew had MOUNTAIN DEW handling the choppy water well with a blitzing 11.94 secs. Racing was a bit different though, with MOUNTAIN DEW going for the maximum points winning heat one and two, but lost turning in heat 3 with a blown rudder servo.
Heat 3 also ended up with no finishes with GARNER GO and OLD SKOOL going dead in the water. MR SNIFTER’S had the unfortunate faux pas of running over OLD SKOOL and having himself promptly disqualified from the rest of the event. Incidentally guys if you do hit a dead boat, it is courteous to check the damage to the boat you have hit and don’t forget to apologise.

Heat 4 and 5 turned out to be a benefit for the patched up OLD SKOOL taking out the wins. Andrew had borrowed Bob’s rudder servo to get MOUNTAIN DEW back on the water and took out the win with OLD SKOOL pushing hard but flipping on the last turn.

Sunday turned out as predicated and we had a full day racing on good water.
Merv took out N2 with CENTURY 21 and VOODOO and MOTUL both flipping trying to keep up.
Limited P saw a great tussle between Jeff’s SUPERIOR and Merv’s WHIP-LASHED with Jeff Leading most of the way but going a bit wide on lap 3 turn leaving room for Merv to sneak through, but a good race indeed. VOODOO came in 3rd and MOTUL failed to finish.

John’s back up boat PAY-N-PAK which he hasn’t run for a few years took out heat one. YORK repowered with a CMB67 showed its extra speed with a win in heat 2. Heat 3 was one of those heats that no one finished. YORK took out heat 4 and Budweiser having a bad day managed to stay alive long enough to take out heat 5. CELLULAR ONE wasn’t going to miss out on a heat win and took out heat 6. Jason finally got DEWALT to run and Heat 7 and 8 was his. This was going to make an interesting Take all Final with YORK and DEWALT looking like the ones to take the Trophy out, but had John been foxing with his PAY-N-PAK? John got a good start and was never headed, though CELLULAR ONE and YORK gave a good chase. DEWALT just couldn’t get it onto pipe and trailed the field. BUDWEISER and SPEEDY were left dead on the water. PAY-N-PAK increased his lead while CELLULAR ONE and YORK fought over second place which YORK eventually got. A good win for the PRIDE of PAY-N-PAK and a big smile was on John’s face when he bought his boat back into the pits. Well done John!

Sports Petrol Hydro was next up with the one lappers.
MOUNTAIN DEW again took this out with a new record for this course 12.19secs. Second a good five seconds back was MISTER SNIFTER’S followed very closely by OLD SKOOL.
Heat one through to five was won by MOUNTAIN DEW with GARNER GO the only boat keeping the pressure on MOUNTAIN DEW. The Winner Take All Final was easily won by MOUNTAIN DEW with GARNER GO having one of its best days for a long time taking out 2nd place. MISTER SNIFTERS with a dodgy throttle linkage came home in 3rd place.

Thanks to the Taranaki Guys for a great weekend, great BBQ and good to see some new faces there and hope this is the start for a re-growth in the Taranaki Club.
